When’s the best time to book your 2027 holiday?

If you're starting to think about your 2027 holiday, you might already be questioning whether you should book now, wait for the January sales or hold your nerve until closer to departure.

But there's a problem with that question - there isn't one right answer.

Because the best time to book depends on where you're going, when you're travelling and, perhaps most importantly, what you want from your holiday.

And "best" doesn't always mean cheapest.

For you it might mean getting the perfect family room. Securing a particular cruise cabin. Finding the right flights. Planning a once-in-a-lifetime experience for a special occasion. Or simply getting everything organised well in advance so you can relax knowing your holiday is sorted.

And yes, sometimes this does mean getting the best possible price too.

If you’re after a bargain, flexibility can be your friend.

Being open to different dates, airports, destinations or hotels gives you more opportunities to compare offers and take advantage of promotions.

But for fixed dates or very specific requirements, waiting in the hope of a better price can be a risk.

You might save money. Or you might find that the holiday you actually wanted is no longer available.

If you’re looking for something specific

This is where booking earlier can really make sense.

Popular hotels, family rooms, villas, specific cruise cabins and desirable flight times can sell out long before the destination itself does.

You may still be able to find a holiday later. But it might not be the holiday that’s right for you.

If there’s a particular hotel, room type, cruise itinerary or direct flight, securing it early can be more valuable than waiting for a possible discount.

If you're planning something special

Perhaps you're celebrating a milestone birthday, anniversary or honeymoon.

Maybe you've always dreamed of taking the family to Florida, seeing the Northern Lights or finally going on safari.

When a holiday has a particular purpose or meaning, price isn't going to be the only consideration.

You’ll have been dreaming about this for years, so a specific room, experience or itinerary becomes even more important. That’s why in these situations, planning early can give you the time and choice to create something genuinely special.

And starting to plan doesn't necessarily mean booking immediately. Sometimes the most useful first step is simply understanding what's possible.

If you're planning an adventure

Some holidays are wonderfully simple.

Others involve flights, several hotels, car hire, internal travel, excursions and experiences that all need to work together.

A road trip around the USA, a multi-centre trip through Japan, a safari combined with a beach stay or a holiday visiting several cities can take some thought.

Starting early gives you time to work out the route, compare options and make sure the pieces fit together for the holiday of a lifetime.

If you’re stuck to school holiday dates

This is one of the biggest factors for families.

If you can only travel during the school holidays, your flexibility is already limited.

And when thousands of other families are looking for the same few weeks, popular accommodation and convenient flights can disappear quickly.

For some families, securing the right holiday early is more important than waiting to see whether the price drops.

After all, there's not much benefit in saving £100 if it means changing the dates, airport or hotel you actually wanted.

If you're open to ideas

You genuinely don't mind where you go, when you travel or which hotel you stay in, you have much more freedom.

This is where watching promotions or looking for late availability can sometimes work well.

You might discover somewhere you hadn't considered or find an offer that makes a destination particularly appealing.

The important thing is being honest about how flexible you really are.

There's a big difference between saying "we're flexible" and then being happy to fly from any airport, midweek at 11pm and staying in whichever suitable hotel has availability.

But isn’t booking early always cheaper?

No.

And this is an important distinction.

Booking early can give you choice, certainty and time to plan. It doesn't automatically mean you'll get the lowest possible price.

Equally, waiting doesn't guarantee a bargain.

Sometimes prices fall. Sometimes they rise. Sometimes the room you wanted disappears completely.

Travel pricing is influenced by demand, availability, seasonality, flight capacity and many other factors, which means there simply isn't a universal rule.

That's why we're always wary of advice that says"always book X months before you travel."

Your holiday isn't the same as everyone else's.

What about the January sales and airline offers?

January is traditionally a busy period for holiday bookings and there are often plenty of promotions around.

But January isn't a magic date when every holiday suddenly becomes cheaper.

For some holidays, waiting until January could be perfectly reasonable.

For others, you might find that the hotel, cabin or flights you wanted are already becoming limited.

If you're planning something popular or have fixed dates, we'd be more inclined to look early.

If you're flexible, there may be more benefit in keeping an eye on offers.

Airline sales are another reason not to think of holiday pricing as having one specific "booking season".

Airlines regularly launch promotions throughout the year, sometimes on flights well into the following year.

That means it's worth keeping an eye on current offers — but don't let a sale persuade you to book a holiday that isn't right for you.

A discounted flight isn't necessarily a bargain if the dates don't work, the flight times are inconvenient or the accommodation you want isn't available.

What does ODR or "Out of Date Range" mean?

If you're planning well ahead, you may come across the term ODR – Out of Date Range.

In simple terms, this means flights aren't yet available for normal booking because the airline hasn't released that particular date into its standard booking window. Most airlines release seats around 10 months in advance of the departure date, so if you're looking at a 2027 holiday, you may be planning before all of the flight options are available.

This doesn't mean you have to wait before starting to plan or book. Instead, you’ll be given an estimated price for the flights, and as soon as they become available the price is confirmed for you to decide if you still want to go ahead.

This means you can get your itinerary, accommodation and other elements organised early so you’re in a better position when the flights do become available.

So, when is the best time to book your 2027 holiday?

Rather than following a fixed rule, think about what matters most to you.

There isn't one magic booking window.

Because the best holiday isn't necessarily the cheapest one, or the earliest one you can book.

It's the one that's right for you.
