Where to go on holiday in October? 12 destinations we love

July 07, 20266 min read

October is one of those underrated months for travel. The summer crowds have thinned, temperatures are often more comfortable, and in many destinations you'll still find plenty of sunshine.

So, whether you're looking for a family holiday over half term, a romantic escape before winter sets in, a cultural city break or a spontaneous long-haul adventure, October offers fantastic opportunities.

Here’s some of our favourites…

Best October holidays for families

Arizona, USA

Arizona might not be the first destination that springs to mind for a family holiday, but if you’re looking for a mix of sunshine, shopping and exploring then it’s definitely worth your attention.

October brings warm, sunny days without the extreme summer temperatures this area can experience. Perfect for relaxing by the pool at one of the many family-friendly resorts, or for visiting a local splash pad to cool off. And across Scottsdale and Phoenix you’ll find plenty of air-conditioned shopping centres, interactive museums and family attractions.

If you’re after a bit more adventure then easy hiking trails, stunning desert scenery and opportunities to discover iconic landscapes including the Grand Canyon are all within reach. Making Arizona the ideal destination if you're looking for something a little different from the traditional beach holiday.

Norwegian Fjords cruise

If your family prefers breathtaking scenery to beaches, October can be a wonderful time to experience a Norwegian Fjords cruise.

The dramatic mountains, waterfalls and picturesque villages become even more beautiful as autumn colours begin to appear. And with shorter days there’s even a possibility you might catch the Northern Lights.

Cruising not only makes travelling with children surprisingly easy, with entertainment, swimming pools and activities onboard while you wake up somewhere new each morning. But it’s also a relaxing way to introduce younger travellers to different cultures without the constant packing and unpacking.

Turkey

Turkey remains one of the best-value family destinations during October.

Resorts along the south coast in Antalya still enjoy warm temperatures, meaning you can continue making the most of beaches and waterparks long after much of Europe has cooled down. Many all-inclusive hotels continue operating throughout October, making budgeting much easier for families.

The sea remains warm enough for swimming, excursions are more comfortable than in the height of summer, and you'll often find excellent offers outside the busiest school holiday weeks.

Best October holidays for couples

The Maldives

If your idea of romance involves white sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters and complete relaxation, the Maldives is hard to beat.

October offers an opportunity to enjoy one of the world's most luxurious destinations with fewer visitors than the peak winter months. Spend your days snorkelling vibrant coral reefs, relaxing in an overwater villa or simply switching off from everyday life.

There’s good reason it's the ultimate destination for honeymoons, anniversaries or anyone looking to escape the world for a while.

Rabat, Morocco

While Marrakech often steals the spotlight, Morocco's capital city, Rabat, offers a quieter and equally rewarding experience.

With a fascinating blend of historic architecture and modern culture, Rabat is perfect for a long weekend or short autumn escape. Wander through peaceful botanical gardens, explore impressive historical sites, stroll along the Atlantic coastline and discover traditional markets without the overwhelming crowds found elsewhere.

This is a destination full of character that combines culture, history and excellent food.

Crete, Greece

Crete truly comes into its own during October.

The summer crowds have largely disappeared, but temperatures remain pleasantly warm, allowing you to enjoy a mix of sightseeing and beach time – with the sea very much still warm enough for swimming.

Whether you want to explore the island’s ancient archaeological sites, hike through its dramatic gorges, visit local vineyards and olive groves or simply unwind at a luxurious adults-only spa resort, it’s easy to combine adventure with complete relaxation.

Best October city breaks

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Dubrovnik is far more enjoyable once the intense summer heat has passed.

October offers comfortable temperatures for walking the famous city walls, exploring the UNESCO-listed Old Town and enjoying leisurely waterfront dinners. The city's autumn food festivals also showcase fantastic local produce, making it an excellent destination for food lovers at this time of year.

Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona remains lively throughout October thanks to its packed calendar of festivals, exhibitions and cultural events.

Comfortable temperatures make it much easier to explore the city's famous architecture, wander through colourful neighbourhoods or relax on the beach before enjoying tapas into the evening.

It's an ideal choice if you want to combine city sightseeing with a little late-season sunshine.

Berlin, Germany

Berlin is particularly beautiful in autumn.

Its parks are filled with colourful autumn leaves, creating the perfect backdrop for long walks between museums, galleries and historic landmarks. October also brings a vibrant programme of exhibitions, concerts and cultural events, making it an excellent destination for anyone looking for a city break with substance.

Long-haul adventures in October

Japan

October is widely considered one of the best times to visit Japan.

The weather is generally mild and comfortable, making it perfect for exploring bustling cities like Tokyo and Kyoto or venturing into the countryside. Autumn colours begin appearing across many regions, adding another layer of beauty to Japan's already spectacular scenery.

Whether you're interested in incredible food, ancient temples, modern technology or unforgettable landscapes, Japan offers an experience unlike anywhere else.

Florida

For us, Florida is a destination that never loses its magic.

For some families it's the holiday of a lifetime. For many others, it's somewhere they return to again and again because every visit offers something new.

October is one of our favourite times to visit. And if you can travel before the October half-term rush and remain flexible with your accommodation, you'll often find excellent value. The weather is still warm but noticeably less humid than during the summer months, making days in the theme parks much more comfortable.

Halloween transforms the destination, with pumpkin displays, seasonal treats and special events across the parks. And at Walt Disney World, the EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival continues throughout much of October, giving visitors the chance to sample dishes and drinks from around the world while enjoying live entertainment.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is an excellent choice for travellers looking for something a little different.

Its beautiful beaches, incredible wildlife, ancient temples and scenic train journeys mean it's a destination that perfectly combines relaxation with adventure. October can be a wonderful time to explore many parts of the island, whether you're spotting elephants on safari, visiting tea plantations or unwinding beside the Indian Ocean.

Ideal for anyone looking for a holiday packed with memorable experiences.
